Position Summary:
The Retail Sorter/Forklift Operator is responsible for safely operating powered industrial equipment to move, load, and transport materials throughout the yard. This role also supports material processing by identifying, inspecting, and sorting metals to ensure quality and operational efficiency, while maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safely load, unload, move, stack, and stage materials using a forklift.
- Transport materials throughout the yard as directed.
- Assist in identifying and sorting various metals (aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel, steel, etc.) by grade.
- Inspect incoming materials to ensure they meet company and customer specifications.
- Use basic hand tools, magnets, and testing equipment to determine metal type and quality.
- Place graded materials in designated bins, containers, or storage areas.
- Assist equipment operators with loading and unloading materials.
- Perform routine inspections and basic preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
- Report equipment defects, damage, unsafe conditions, or repair needs to a supervisor.
- Keep equipment clean and in proper working condition.
- Assist with the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices as needed.
- Follow all company safety procedures, security standards, and wear required PPE.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.
Qualifications:
- Experience: 1–2 years of forklift operating experience preferred.
- Certification: Ability to obtain forklift certification.
- Knowledge of scrap metal grading or recycling operations preferred.
- Ability to use basic tools and testing equipment to identify metal types.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry materials weighing 40–50 pounds.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Previous production, warehouse, recycling, or manufacturing experience is a plus.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
